In Louisiana, the Fireworks Pyrotechnic Operator (FPO) and Special Effects Operator (SEO) licenses are administered by the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM).
Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office FPO (Fireworks Pyrotechnic Operator): Covers large-scale outdoor displays (traditionally 1.3G fireworks).
SEO (Special Effects Operator): Covers the use of proximate pyrotechnics and flame effects near an audience (indoor/stage/film).
Both exams require a solid understanding of Statutes & Rules (Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 51:650-660) and specific safety codes. The specific code coverage for each exam:
FPO Exam: Covers the rules and principles from NFPA 1123 (Code for Fireworks Display).
SEO Exam: Covers the rules and principles from NFPA 1126 (Standard for the Use of Pyrotechnics Before a Proximate Audience).
