Tennessee primarily uses the International Plumbing Code (IPC) as its statewide model code. Specific editions and requirements vary based on the jurisdiction and whether the work is commercial or residential.
Commercial & General Plumbing: The State of Tennessee currently enforces the 2021 International Plumbing Code (IPC).
Residential Plumbing: For one- and two-family dwellings, plumbing is typically governed by the International Residential Code (IRC) (often adopting the 2018 or 2021 edition alongside state-specific amendments).
Local Exceptions: Municipalities in Tennessee can be classified as “exempt” jurisdictions. This means that cities with certified local inspectors may adopt their own local codes (e.g., Nashville/Davidson County rely on modified 2018 IPC standards).
