Book updated July 2026.

The Certified Association Executive CAE credential is for those who demonstrated a wide range of knowledge essential to manage an association in today’s highly challenging environment. The exam has received a significant update that took effect with the December 2025 exam administration. Within the Governance domain, a notable addition is the new subdomain focused on component relations, which addresses the management of relationships with chapters or other constituent parts of the association, ensuring that the governance framework effectively supports and coordinates these affiliated entities. There is also a heightened emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion, with candidates now expected to apply practices that nurture a culture of representation, equity, inclusion, and accessibility throughout the governance structure. The Executive Leadership domain has been significantly expanded to include adaptive leadership as a major focus area, which encompasses the cultivation of foresight through promoting a culture that assesses the impact of future trends, challenges, and opportunities, the formulation of crisis management plans to guide the organization through unexpected disruptions, and the promotion of staff wellness by fostering a culture of self-care that supports well-being, satisfaction, and productivity. Additionally, a full subdomain on DEI leadership has been introduced, requiring candidates to model a culture of inclusion and address changing demographic and cultural trends that affect the association and its members.

The Organizational Strategy domain now includes a new subdomain on digital strategy, which focuses on advancing the association’s digital initiatives, overseeing the adoption of emerging technologies, and implementing ethical standards for digital initiatives to ensure responsible and effective use of technology. In the Operations domain, vendor relations has been added as a new subdomain that covers the entire lifecycle of working with external partners, from needs assessment through contract management and ongoing compliance monitoring. The Business Development domain has been strengthened with new subdomains covering industry standards, which addresses the development and maintenance of standards that support the profession or industry served by the association, and licensure and accreditation, which provides a dedicated focus on understanding and managing credentialing programs that validate professional competence.
